Acer's "Blue" Ace: Aspire Gemstone Blue Notebook

Today in New York, Acer's big surprise is the Aspire "Gemstone Blue" notebook, equipped with a Blu-ray drive, true high-def screen, and CineReal sound, a second generation of Dolby Surround. Sexy, and yes, blue, and it doesn't appear to suffer from port envy like some other notebooks, though it is slender. In size it's somewhere between HP's dv series and Dell's XPS M series. That's not just a size comparison, but a qualitative judgment call: this thing looks unambitiously nestled between the two other PC giants' designs. With such mystery and fanfare, we were hoping for a tad more of an exciting, iconoclastic design. It is, however, a decent product, so have a look. UPDATE: Weights and model numbers below.

It's got a cool touchdial on the left for some nice multimedia controls; it's called CineDash, and it's got volume, mute, hold, media transport and menu navi.

The largest of the two models, the 8920, has a 1920x1080 18.4" screen, and a 90% (ATSC?) color gamut. The smaller, the 6920, is 16" with same resolution and 60% of the color gamut. As you can guess from those screen resolutions, both can support full Blu-ray playback. (Another blue reference.) They're saying 3 hours playback on the 18.4", and 2.5 hours of movie playback on the 16" one. There will be an "SD" version with 720p playback of either DVD or Blu-ray.

They're shipping in a month. The starting price point is $1,700, with a typical config around $1,900.

UPDATE: The weights are a bit troubling for anyone interested in mobility: Over 9 lbs for the 18.4 incher, and nearly 8 lbs for the 16 incher.

Apple Announces New Notebooks and Displays

After months of rumors and speculation, Apple has finally announced its new line of notebooks. The new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and MacBook — along with a brand new 24-inch cinema display — were all revealed at the company’s mystery-shrouded event in Cupertino, Calif. today.

The New MacBook Pro

The new MacBook Pro has an unibody enclosure made from a single sheet of aluminum — the much discussed “brick” build — and is once again the thinnest ever model, coming in at only 0.95 inches. All connectors are on one side, including the speculated mini-DisplayPort for home theater connection. As expected, the back side of the casing can be removed to access the battery and hard drive.

When it comes to graphics, the MacBook Pro features a brand new graphics processor from Nvidia that incorporates both the chipset and GPU into a single die. The Nvidia GeForce 9400M performs five times faster than the current MacBook Pro systems, Steve Jobs said. The notebook also comes with the Nvidia 9600M GT, described as a “state-of-the-art graphics” system. It offers 512MB of video memory and can be activated by switching to “turbo mode” within the settings. The 9400 provides five hours of battery life, while the 9600 drops down to about four.

The new MacBook Pro also boasts a large multi-touch glass trackpad. It’s 39 percent larger than its predecessor, and the entire thing functions as the button. It recognizes several gestures that perform functions such as zooming, panning, and app switching.

The cheapest model, at $1999, includes a 15.4-inch LED backlit display. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3MB L2 Cache, 2GB 1066MHz DDR3 Memory, the two GeForces, and a 250GB hard drive and SuperDrive. The top-of-the-line model, at $2499, gets you up to 2.53GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 4GB memory, 512MB video memory, and a 320GB hard drive. Both will be shipping today.

The New MacBook

Not to be left behind, the MacBook is getting a makeover as well. There will be three versions, all available starting tomorrow:

A $999 “Next Generation” model, featuring the same aluminum unibody enclosure as the Pro, a corner-to-corner glass LED-backlit display, the new multi-touch glass trackpad, an added mini-DisplayPort connector, and the Nvidia 9400M graphics system

The New MacBook Air

A souped-up MacBook Air is on the way in November. It will get the 9400M graphics system, along with a 120GB hard drive or 128GB SSD and an added mini-DisplayPort. The notebook will be offered in a 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo version for $1799 and a 1.86GHz CPU version (with the 128GB SSD) for $2499.

The New Cinema Display

Finally, Jobs and his team announced a new 24-inch LED-backlit Cinema Display. It offers 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution and features three connectors: MagSafe, USB, and mini-DisplayPort. The display also has built-in iSight, microphone, and stereo speakers. It’ll be available in November for $899 — presumably making it the rumored $800-range product first reported here last week.

Multitech, founded by Stan Shih, his wife Carolyn Yeh, and a group of five others in 1976, was renamed Acer in 1987. It began with eleven employees and US$25,000 in capital. Initially, it was primarily a distributor of electronic parts and a consultant in the use of microprocessor technologies. The global headquarters is in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Acer purchased Texas Instruments' mobile PC (laptop) division in 1997.

In 2000, Acer spun off its manufacturing operation as Wistron Corporation, to focus itself on branding business. In deciding to support the sales of its product lines through specific marketing activities that best utilise distribution channels, Acer grew worldwide while its labour force contracted. If you find green notebook from HP that great battery life, it is HP 2710p Tablet PC. Before charging, it can work 4-5 hours. Other “battery slice” is offered, that may work till 8 hours although you need to pay $180 for it. Even, EPEAT Gold certified has been given to it.

However, HP 2710p Tablet PC is not so efficient. The display is “washed-out”. Even, the performance is not as good as I hope.

Asus Eee PC" (3ePC) With 7-inch Display

Asus chairman Jonney Shih introduced an ultra-low-cost, ultra-portable notebook computer at a Computex keynote this week. The "Eee PC" (3ePC) features a 7-inch display, weighs about two pounds, and runs either Windows XP or Linux from 2-16MB of internal flash memory.

Shih characterized the 3ePC as the "lowest cost and easiest PC to use," and said it would be marketed around the world, rather than exclusively in developing nations. The user interface offers a simplified novice mode, for new computer users, as well as a more traditional desktop mode.

Asus lists the 3ePC's dimensions as 8.6 x 6.5 x 1.3 inches (225 x 165 x 21-35mm), making it roughly the same size as Via's NanoBook, also introduced at Computex this week. Additionally, the 3ePC has a 7-inch display and weighs about two pounds (890gm) -- specs that also match those of the NanoBook.

The 3epc is based on an unspecified Intel processor and chipset. Given the laptop's low cost, it may well be among the first products based on Tolapai, Intel's forthcoming Pentium M-powered SoC (system-on-chip). Along with a Pentium M core clocked between 600MHz and 1.2GHz, initial Tolopai chips are expected to integrate components traditionally found in PC northbridges and southbridges -- a graphics processing unit (GPU), external memory and storage controllers, and peripheral interfaces such as USB and Ethernet.

Asus said the 3ePC's graphics processing unit (GPU) will have a unified memory architecture (UMA), meaning it will borrow memory from the 3ePC's 512MB of DDR2-400 main system memory. Storage will be provided by between 2-16GB of flash -- presumably with frequently accessed filesystem points mounted on ramdisks.

I/O includes 10/100 Ethernet, a 56K modem, 802.11b/g WiFi, and "hi-definition" audio I/O. Additionally, the device has built-in stereo speakers and a 300K-pixel video camera. A four-cell, 2s2p (two-in-series, two-in-parallel) 5200mAh battery will provide a claimed three hours of battery life.

Asus commented, "This is a new line of PCs that focuses on providing users with the most comprehensive Internet application based on three Es: Easy to learn, work, play; Excellent Internet experience, and Excellent mobile computing experience."

The 3ePC appears to be priced at $190 when equipped with Linux -- or perhaps without any OS. It is also compatible with Windows XP, and may be available for $300 with Windows XP pre-installed.

Sony Vaio VGN NR485 scored only 78 point on PCWorld review test. This notebook has positive feature like it’s nice design and good battery life but it also has some weakness on Unsatisfyingly short keystrokes and Hard drive not user upgradable. A Windows Vista Home Premium laptop powered by a 2-GHz Core 2 Duo T5750 and 2GB of RAM, the VGN-NR485 bagged a respectable WorldBench 6 score of 75. That’s pretty solid performance for a laptop that stands among the cheapest notebook of it’s class. It sells for $849 and It has the speed to handle almost any kind of application except 3D gaming tests, which the VGN-NR485 couldn’t run because of its lousy integrated Intel graphics chip.

The keyboard is a matter of taste. If you can ignore the somewhat short stroke, it’s comfortable, featuring keys with spacious flat tops. A solid performer with all the most important connections, loads of storage, and an eye-catching dark-blue finish, the Sony VGN-NR485 is a sweet little deal for the under-$1000 notebook.

What do we need to say? This is an absolute beauty. Stylish looks and enough under the bonnet to keep this laptop purring like a cat. We'll start off with the processor which is an Intel Dual Core T2310 running at 1.46Ghz, obviously you can expect pretty much double that. These processors are designed to be more efficient than previous single core models and as such your laptop is less likely to fall over when multi-tasking. To go with this there is also 2Gb of DDR2 memory installed, helping you to whizz through the most mundane of tasks. The OS is Windows Vista Home Premium and despite all the bad press, this really is the future of computing. With the decent processor and memory size you should have very little issues with this power hungry software. With the SIS Mirage3 integrated graphics of 256Mb shared you should be able to play alot of the games on the market although it is always advisable to check the minimum spec required first. The hard drive is a whopping 120Gb, which is more like what you would have expected in a PC a few years back. There is more than enough space on here for even the most click happy photographer. The optical drive is a DVDRW which will enable you to play and record on to CD and DVD fromat. The 15.4" WXGA screen will allow you to watch movies as they were designed to seen, in widescreen! Let's not forget the built in wireless and also the very handy 4-in-1 card reader.There is nothing more we can say about this laptop that hasn't already been said, it is a beauty!
